MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man who was shot along Highway 385 on July 4 was arrested on attempted murder charges shortly after being released from the hospital.
Police said a man walked into St. Francis Hospital on Sunday afternoon telling hospital staff that he had been shot on Highway 385 near the Ridgeway exit. Authorities scoured the area, blocking off the roadways to search for evidence.
On Monday, authorities confirmed the shooting victim, identified as Jamie Hill, was facing several charges including attempted first-degree murder, employment of a firearm and reckless endangerment in regard to another shooting from April.
In that case, a man told police he was driving in a Hickory Hill neighborhood looking for a car that he was repossessing.
Hill, who was driving an Infiniti, began following the man. When the man let him pass he told detectives Hill turned the car around and started shooting at him before driving away.
The man was not hit but some of those bullets did hit a home nearby.
Hill was booked while still wearing his green hospital gown. His bond is set at $120,000.
So far this year there have been 68 interstate shootings in Memphis.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland recently talked about using federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act to cut down on these shootings.
“From a state perspective we’re hoping these funds can go to things that we’ve been asking for help with for many years. More and a permanent presence of the Tennessee Highway Patrol on interstates in Memphis and cameras on the interstates in Memphis to help curb interstate shootings,” Strickland said.
