(Memphis) Memphis police are on the hunt for whoever killed a man who ended up dying in a church courtyard.

Police found Christopher Lawson behind Israelite Missionary Baptist Church on Silver Age Avenue in South Memphis.

It’s a place of worship, a place to celebrate life, but Thursday night, a man had his final moments there when somebody murdered him.

“For real?” said Linnell Alexander, who owns a barbeque shop right next door to the church.

Alexander said she didn’t know about it because she finished work and went home at 9:15 p.m. Thursday. Lawson was found there just after 10 p.m.

She said she found evidence Friday morning that paramedics tried to save his life.

“There were some gloves purple gloves lying out on the street and I just pick them up and put them in the garbage.”

Also Friday morning, neighbor Martin William said he got a knock on his door from detectives asking questions.

“Do I know anything about somebody named Chris,” said Williams. “Saying something about how he got shot.”

Martin says he doesn’t know the man and has no idea what happened because he was at work Thursday night.

“There are plenty of gunshots in this area,” said Alexander.

“Does that make you concerned for your safety?” asked reporter Sabrina Hall.

“Oh, of course,” said Alexander.

“You just got to be more aware of your surroundings, what’s going on and the people that you mess with,” said William.

Police want you to call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH if you know anything about the murder.
