MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 21-year-old man is in critical condition following an overnight stabbing outside an Overton Square bar.
Police were called to Bar Louie at 2125 Madison Ave. around 1:20 a.m. Thursday.
Officers located two male victims in the parking lot at Cooper Street and Trimble Place. One was stabbed in the left torso, the other slashed in the cheek.
“It just goes to show that things could happen anywhere, because that’s the kind of place where you feel safe,” Bar Louie customer Anthony Versace said.
Trendy shops, restaurants and bars line the streets of Overton Square, a popular spot in Midtown to grab dinner and drinks, and one of the last places most people expect to hear about any kind of violent crime.
“I’ve never seen any issues there. It’s a very friendly, good neighborhood. This is a nice area in Memphis,” the customer said.
But overnight, police say a stranger stabbed 21-year-old Oscar Carrete in the torso and slashed his friend, 26-year-old Rudy Hernandez, across the face in the parking lot behind Bar Louie after the men and some of their friends got into it with him in the bar.
Loeb Properties, Inc. released a statement on the incident, saying: “Overton Square is committed to providing a safe environment for visitors and businesses with extensive, ever-changing security procedures that include 24 hour onsite security. We are working closely with the Memphis Police Department and have provided security camera footage of the incident to assist their efforts.”
Police say they were able to find out what they believe could be the suspects name and contact information from his credit card receipt, and a woman at the bar says he gave her his number.
He’s described as middle-aged, 6 foot 2 wearing all denim with a Kangol hat.
