Man Steals Hair Weave, Leaves Trail Behind

(Memphis) A Whitehaven man is in jail, accused of breaking into an apartment and stealing a hair weave.

Police say he didn’t get far.

The security at Peppertree Apartments wouldn’t let us on the grounds, but that’s where a woman’s apartment was burglarized.

Police say she helped solve the crime by following a trail of hair.

Unlike Hansel and Gretel, who left a trail of bread crumbs to find their way back home, police say it was hair extensions that marked the path to Brandon Jones’ apartment.

“Sad,” said neighbor Chelsea Johnson.

Police say Jones climbed into his neighbor’s window, stole her cellphone, Wii gaming system, and her hair.

When the victim discovered the break-in, she used her phone’s GPS tracking system to find out her stolen stuff wasn’t far away; in fact, it was just two doors down.

Another clue also led her there — the thief left a trail of hair extensions from outside her window all the way to his front door.

“I have never heard of anybody stealing hair extensions, ever,” said neighbor Zipporah Peters.

“Do you know that guy?” asked reporter Sabrina Hall.

“I know him but I don’t know him like that,” said a neighbor.

“You didn’t know he liked hair extensions?” asked Hall.

He shook his head.

The crime has some shaking their heads, but the Peppertree Apartments has seen its share of crime.

“It’s mostly young boys shooting,” said Johnson.

In the last year, police have responded to at least four shootings at the complex, including shootings involving two teenagers and a pregnant woman.

Security wouldn’t let us learn more about the hair weave theft, but neighbors say the crime can easily be untangled.

“Just young and dumb. That’s basically it,” said Johnson.

Twenty-year-old Jones is now experiencing an extended stay at 201 Poplar, charged with aggravated burglary.

He is being held on a $10,000 bond.
