MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man wanted for raping a child is in custody after police said he tried to swim, run and fight his way past police.

It happened just after 9 Monday morning at the Eden at Watersedge.

Police said they got a tip Alvertis Brown was hiding there.

Brown has been on the run since July. He’s wanted for a long list of charges including child rape, aggravated sexual battery, two counts of aggravated assault, drugs and weapons.

Police wouldn’t go into detail about what he exactly did.

“I have a daughter, so it scares me a little bit,” said Yalonda Williams, who lives close to the apartment where police nabbed Brown this morning.

It wasn’t easy, though.

U.S. Marshals along with MPD tried to arrest him but said he climbed down the balcony, jumped into that lake, swam to the other side and then took off running.

When Brown was finally caught, he reportedly attacked one officer while the other tried to handcuff him.

Many neighbors saw officers in the apartment but had no idea what unfolded or who Brown was.

WREG went to his last known address on Highland where a woman told us deputies came to her home several times searching for him.

“Just looking for the same person, and I keep telling them that I don’t know who it is or who he is related to,” she told us.

Brown is back in jail Monday night.

That’s right. Again.

Police arrested him several times since 2010 for animal cruelty, theft, drugs, and aggravated assault.

Brown is also facing resisting and evading arrest and assault.
