MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man carrying multiple guns was found at Melrose High School in Orange Mound Friday, police said. According to Shelby County Schools, the man was buzzed in as a visitor and was asked to check in at the main office, per protocol. When he didn’t go to the main office, security arrived and found he was armed. Officers were called, and they arrived at the school at about 11:30 a.m. The school officer told police the man came to the school with multiple handguns after he threatened his girlfriend, who is a 17-year-old student at Melrose, police said. Police said the man made it to his girlfriend’s classroom, but SCS said the man never came into contact with any students. Police detained the suspect, 20-year-old Darrel Benton, and found the guns on him. He was taken into custody. Benton was charged with domestic assault and carrying a weapon on school property.
