TATE COUNTY, Miss. — The search is on for a man accused of shooting at police in Mississippi.

“The suspect had fired several shots at the Crenshaw police officer,” Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said.

James Michael Green is considered armed and dangerous.

He is accused of shooting at a Crenshaw, Mississippi police officer and taking them on a chase from Panola County to Tate County.

Green was originally being stopped for an alleged traffic violation.

Deputies said Green wrecked his car at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 4 in Tate County and ran away.

At least four law enforcement agencies spent Monday morning searching for Green

With an armed man on the run, many people are worried about the kids who live in the area.

Strayhorn Elementary and High Schools spent the day on lock down.

“You never know what could happen,” Connie Partridge said. “I mean even with them changing classes you never know he could come out and do something,” she said.

Sheriff Lance said Green is 5’10” and was last seen wearing an orange t-shirt and shorts.

“If anybody sees him, call 911 immediately,” Sheriff Lance explained.

Many people in the community told WREG they hope Green turns himself in and things end peacefully.

“Anyone that’ll shoot at anyone is dangerous and to have one shoot at a law enforcement officer, of course in my opinion, just amplifies the danger to the community as a whole,” Sheriff Lance said.

Green’s current address is listed in Hernando, but law enforcement is not sure if he still resides there.
