MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A south Memphis father of four was brutally beaten and left for dead, now Memphis Police say they have identified his attacker, but need the public’s help finding him.

Jernise Morgan says she will never forget October 11, 2023, the day that changed her life. She says the nightmare started with a knock at her front door.

“My neighbor came and knocked on the door and he was like ‘You might want to go and check on your brother, somebody just attacked him down the street’,” Jernise said.

Jernise ran down to the 1600 block of Rayburn Street in South Memphis where she found her brother Shanqualus Morgan in a grassy, deserted field.

“He was laying face down on the ground unresponsive, limp, shadow breathing,” Jernise said.

That is when she called the police.

“I told them I needed an ambulance because my brother was unresponsive,” she said.

Shanqualus was then rushed to Regional One Hospital.

“I get to the hospital; I was told that he had brain injuries and it was more than likely that he wasn’t going to recover from it,” Jernise said.

Memphis police homicide detective discovered surveillance video of a man armed with a pole chasing Shanqualus moments before the attack.

Detectives also uncovered surveillance video of the same man putting that pole in the trunk of a vehicle and leaving the scene of the crime.

Investigators have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Alfred Draper. Jernise says that Draper and Shanqualus have known each other for years.

“He grew up around my brothers, he knows my brother, he knows them, so for you to be the person to take my brother’s life, that says a lot about you as a person because that’s someone that you have known since you were knee high to a pup growing up,” Jernise said.

She says after the attack, her brother never recovered from his injuries and stayed on life support for several days before taking his last breath.

She also says that her brother saved the lives of several other people through organ donation.

Homicide investigators have issued a first-degree murder warrant for Alred Draper in connection with the killing. If you know where Alfred Draper is, call CrimeStoppers at 528-cash.
