MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother is mourning the death of her 18-year-old son and searching for answers after he was shot to death outside the Amazon facility in August of last year.
Brittany Isom is on a mission to get answers. Memphis police say her son, 18-year-old Markavian Isom was shot in the 3200 block of East Holmes Road last August, but no one has been charged for the crime.
“I can’t see somebody hating him so much to kill him,” said Isom. “My mommy called me, but I knew it, I felt it in my soul she was finna say something about Markavian. I knew it.”
Her motherly intuition was right, she was about to receive the worst news imaginable for any parent.
“All I could hear her say was ‘Brittany… Kavian.’ I said ‘Kavian what?’ Kavian… I can hear it in the back of my head. Something happened to him,” she said.
At the time, Brittany Isom was six hours away in Georgia and could feel the pain and hear the trembling in her mother’s voice as she broke the news — Markavian had been shot.
When homicide detectives arrived, they found him lying on the ground outside the gate of Amazon, he didn’t survive.
“I’m left with a broken heart. I’m left with sadness because I hadn’t seen him since May,” said Isom.
Isom says Markavian was only in town for the summer visiting his grandmother and working at Amazon.
According to investigators, witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and saw a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene moments after the shooting.
Officers say surveillance video also captured Markavian and another man wearing dark-colored clothing seconds before the shooting. Officers believe that the man was Markvian’s shooter.
“I had to come back here and bury my child. I never want to experience this pain again. I just don’t see why they did it,” Isom said.
