MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Animal Shelter is making some policy changes when it comes to their euthanasia procedure.
WREG first learned a new euthanasia policy was in the works in September, after three MAS employees were suspended this summer for euthanizing four puppies that were scheduled for adoption.
WREG’s Luke Jones obtained the new policy Tuesday, which changes the way the so-called “euthanasia list” is verified.
Previously, employees conducting the procedures we check the list to make sure every animal on it was supposed to be there.
“They had a bunch of check and re-check processes in our computer system,” said Memphis Animal Services Director Alexis Pugh.
Now management double checks the list before it’s even sent out, and two managers are required to sign of on it.
“It makes it much harder for anything to fall through the cracks. two sets of eyes are always better than one,” said longtime shelter critic Cindy Marx-Sanders with the Humane Society of the United States.
