HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — A man was rushed to the hospital overnight following an officer-involved shooting in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas.
According to the Arkansas State Police, authorities were called to the 100 block of Caney Creek Road just after midnight for someone who appeared to be in “medical distress.” The complainant also told police the individual was armed with a gun.
When they arrived, officers met 35-year-old Markel Barrow, who was brandishing a weapon and making threatening comments. He then pointed the gun at officers, who demanded he drop the weapon. He reportedly refused to comply and was shot by police.
Barrow was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis for treatment. He is currently in stable condition.
“I’m really shocked and surprised,” resident Betty Adams said. She says she couldn’t believe a shooting took place in her quiet Helena-West Helena neighborhood. She shares the dead-end street with only a handful of neighbors. “You don’t expect something like that to happen so close to home.”
Adams used to be a police dispatcher and says she knows how dangerous those situations can be. “The thing is, it’s dark. They’ve got a gun on police. They don’t know how old he is or nothing. You can’t tell.”
Barrow is the second 35-year-old to be shot by police in Arkansas this week. Sunday night a Blytheville officer shot and killed Marzues Scott after she said he attacked her.
“I don’t understand how this continues and continues and continues to happen,” resident Rosetta T. Kelly said.
Arkansas State Police will be taking over the investigation.
