MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Wednesday our community remembered and mourned the three children killed last year in Shelby County as a result of abuse.
The Memphis Child Advocacy Center held their annual memorial event on the Civic Center Plaza.
It is held every year mourning the lives of murdered children.
Virginia Stallworth with the Advocacy Center said, “April is child abuse prevention month, and it’s important to pause to bear witness to the loss of these lives. Children who should still be here with us.”
This year the service was held in honor of four-month-old Isabella Chavez who died of a reported overdose of Benadryl, 1-year-old Tremaine Black, who had injuries consistent with physical child abuse, and 6-year-old Lupita Gomez, whose father reportedly shot and killed both her and her adult brother.
Child volunteers helped with the ceremony.
Stallworth said they served as a reminder to be open with your children about abuse and teaching them how to report it.
“There are many children that we see at the child advocacy center because they’ve told a good friend, and that good friend tells their parents,” she said.
Of course, Stallworth said it is also important for adults to report any abuse they see.
The Law even requires you to step forward if you think a child may be in danger.
