Memphian excited to meet Pope Francis in Washington

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “The Pope is coming,” Devanie Cooper said.

To say Cooper was happy about Pope Francis’ visit to the United States would have been an understatement.

“We’ve had such holy, virtuous witnesses as Holy Fathers. I’m just so excited to meet our Holy Father to express our love, to express that we’re praying for him and for him to come to the Americas,” Cooper explained.

The Pope is scheduled to fly from Cuba to D.C. on Tuesday and begin a long day of events and appearances on Wednesday.

Cooper had tickets to be inside a ceremony close to her heart.

“While he’s in D.C. he is canonizing one of the first saints in the Americas: Blessed Junipero Serra. I lived in California for a couple of years and walked in the footsteps of the missions and Blessed Junipero Serra. So I’m going to his Canonization,” Cooper said.

Cooper said the Holy Father is a great leader for the Catholic church.

The excited believer said she hopes the Pope’s giving and caring spirit will show others in America what it truly means to be a member of the Catholic faith.

“That is what the church is there for. She’s a mother, and she wants to reach out and say, ‘Our Lord loves you, and we love you, and you have dignity.’ And that’s what Pope Francis is all about. That’s what I as a Catholic — I hope I live up to that,” Cooper said.

Cooper is leaving for Washington on Tuesday evening.
