(Memphis) This Thanksgiving most people are thankful for family, a roof over their head and basic necessities like clothing.
But from some people those things are hard to come by without the help of the Memphis Community.
Gerry Donald doesn’t have any family, but he’s thankful he’s able to enjoy a warm Thanksgiving lunch with new friends.
“It’s very interesting because most people don’t have any family and this is a nice atmosphere and it’s peaceful and quiet and a lot of people don’t know about this,” said Donald.
Gerry is not alone this Thanksgiving, because for twenty years the Christian Fellowship Church and Forgotten Souls Coalition have been hosting this Thanksgiving festival in the heart of midtown.
They make stew for about 200 people and provide things like clothes and give encouragement to anyone in need.
“People are just grateful to say this is what I have and this is what I want to give to show that we do care and their soul is not forgotten,” said James Branch with the Forgotten Souls Coalition.
The group is also handing out bags of necessities to those in need. The bags have things like toothbrushes, tooth paste, soap and toilet paper for those in need.
Rachel Lawson is a teacher at Southwind High School and her class collected a lot of those items to hand out. Many of her students even took time on the holiday to visit with those in need.
“It will just give them an opportunity to kind of, when they reflect throughout the day on what they are really thankful for they will remember that there are people out here in need and they actually touched them,” said Lawson.
Every year more groups help with the event and they are able to serve more and more people giving them something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
