MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tom Lee Park was a muddy mess after thousands of people came out to enjoy BBQ Festival this weekend.
Organizers said the event was a success, but the wet weather did put a bit of a damper on things.
The month of May is winding down but for the President of Memphis in May the work continues.
Monday Jim Holt said this weekend’s BBQ Festival was on pace to be one for the record books with attendance higher than ever, but then the rain hit.
“I’m sure the weather had an impact. We had a little muted response on Friday and Saturday and that’s always the case,” said Holt.
Holt said final numbers for attendance and profits won’t be released until August but said business for some of the private vendors looked good.
“I know that Willy M’s sold out of their ribs Saturday night because I attempted to get some,” he explained.
Richie Floyd of PCI Scaffolding was working in the muddy mess Monday.
“It’s makin’ money for us. It’s crunch time for us,” he said.
His company helped build 15 tents.
“It was wet. Usually we get some kind of break between the builds and tear downs and it doesn’t rain on us but it rained the whole time,” he explained.
Weather aside, the work continues for another event.
“We’re preparing for the Sunset Symphony. We think it’s going to be our largest attendance in a great many years,” said Holt.
Holt suggested concert goers buy their tickets in advance.
