Memphis Man Celebrates 101st Birthday

(Memphis) A Memphis man who may be a familiar face to a lot of drivers is celebrating a big milestone.

Willie Herndon will turn 101 on Tuesday.

He has been selling newspapers at the intersection of Dexter and Appling on Sunday mornings for the last 16 years.

This weekend, his friends hung a banner to let his regular customers know he was celebrating a birthday.

Herndon has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

“I’m going to work. I’m going to work until I get to 105. I’m going to make it to 105,” Herndon said.

Herndon makes about $100 on a normal Sunday. Last year on his birthday, he made over $1,200 in tips.

Selling newspapers is his second career. He is a retired city of Memphis sanitation worker.
