MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother was indicted Tuesday on first-degree murder charges stemming from the death of her 2-year-old son in June.
The mother, Raven Campbell, 19, was charged with his murder shortly after the death.
She put her son, Jermyle, under a mattress for 20 or 30 minutes as discipline, investigators said. When she moved the mattress, he was not breathing, and paramedics found him unresponsive.
Jermyle was pronounced dead at the hospital.
He also had bite marks and scratches on his body.
The cause of death was dehydration and hyperthermia, according to the autopsy.
The indictment charges include first-degree murder in perpetration of aggravated child abuse and neglect as well as aggravated child endangerment.
