TBI investigating after Memphis officer, suspect exchange gunfire during traffic stop in Berclair

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a shootout involving a Memphis officer in Berclair.

According to police, it all began when an officer pulled over a driver around 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 4300 block of Summer Avenue near Waring Road for a license plate violation. As the officer was approaching the silver Infiniti, someone inside started shooting and the officer returned fire.

Before fleeing the scene, the suspect also fired into an occupied car parked in the Taco Bell parking lot, the Memphis Police Department said. No one was hurt.

The gun used during the shooting was recovered on the scene.

Several hours later, a woman believed to be connected to the shooting showed up at the Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound, the TBI said. As of early Wednesday morning, that person was listed as being in critical condition.

In an earlier post by the Memphis Police Department, they identified the person shot as the same individual who fired upon police. A second person who was reportedly in the car at the time of the incident was also detained.

The TBI has not confirmed if the woman was the shooter. They said they are still working to determine that along with the order of events, how many shots were fired and other relevant details.

The officer involved has been routinely relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
