EARLIER:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating a deadly crash in Whitehaven late Sunday evening.

MPD said officers are on the scene of a crash at Holmes and Millbranch. They said a child was struck by a vehicle, and the responsible driver stayed on the scene.

Memphis Police said the boy did not survive his injuries. WREG-TV spoke to the boy’s cousin who said he along with a group of other young boys were just trying to go to the store to get a snack when his cousin was hit and killed.

“I walked across the street and then the dude he was trying to beat the red light, and we was sitting in the turning lane, and we told my cousin not to go and he had went then the dude had hit him,” the cousin said.

Emotions were flying, as family members stood on the sidelines watching helplessly, as Memphis Police carried out their investigation.

“I get this call and my little cousin is gone,” Jaquon Winters, a family member, said. “In the city of Memphis, the dangers are everywhere but being here is very unsafe.”

Family members said the child was a good kid with a very bright future.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time family members said they had to come together under these circumstances. They said they recently lost another family member and now they are forced to plan yet another funeral.

“Just got shot in front of the house. We can’t catch a break. We just had this same family meeting not even a month ago and my little cousin, eleven, is gone,” Winters said.
