MEMPHIS, Tenn. —  The Memphis Police Department announced they wanted to hire hundreds of officers in the next two years.

Gary Johnson who lives there said his number one concern was how many of them are qualified.

“People are more and more corrupt now until are we sure we getting good officers since we rushing just to get officers,” Johnson said. “I think they should take a little more time to scan these officers, give them psychological testing.”

Kevin Moore said the next step after the background check is a series of pre-employment tests such as drug and a psychological tests.

Some said they were happy knowing 75 applicants passed the basic recruitment session.

“Recruiting is good because every time you see officers you feel good, you feel safe,” said Alfonzo Johnson.

He just wanted to make sure police work hard to build strong relationships with people in the community.

“I know quite a few officers and I see them out and it’s good sometimes to get out and walk to some of the neighbor’s homes. Just talk see how everything going,” he said.
