MEMPHIS, Tenn- City leaders are reporting a drop in crime across the city of Memphis; especially Whitehaven.
“So far this year we have had a 7% reduction in crime and the good thing is that in this particular area, the Whitehaven area we’ve had about 21% reduction in crime compared to last year,” said police Director Toney Armstrong,
One Whitehaven homeowner says it’s hard to believe crime is down.
“To me it seems like it got worse, I don’t think it’s down seven percent, I don’t think that’s accurate,” said Ventarious Richards.
Police Director Toney Armstong says the numbers are accurate and he understands why.
“One of the reasons, the precinct commander at Raines station, he and his staff have done a phenomenal job handling crime,” he said.
Ventarious Richards lives in Whitehaven and says the Memphis Police Department isn’t doing enough to address the crime problem.
“It’s nothing for kids to do and at this point they on social media and a lot of times they meet up at different places and there tends to be fights and crime,” he said.
Even though a police officer was shot on this street Thursday, neighbors in Whitehaven say crime isn’t something they’re used to hearing about there.
“It’s quiet, just a lot of older folks and it’s really laid back but we don’t have too much crime,” said Warren Walker.
