MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police continued to investigate a rash of robberies at Family Dollar locations across Memphis on Tuesday.
“Scary, very scary,” said Family Dollar customer Lou King in Orange Mound.
The store he frequents was the latest to be robbed.
Thankfully, no one was hurt at the store’s location on Park.
Police said they believed the same armed robber was also responsible for other Family Dollar hold-ups, but they wouldn’t elaborate further.
“I was surprised when I heard it on the TV this morning,” said customer John Brown.
Police said a man robbed two Family Dollar locations on Summer May 17 and 19.
It’s unclear if he was the same suspect in the Orange Mound case.
“Security needs to be number one,” King said.
“I don’t see that much security. They [Family Dollar] need more supervision,” said customer Andrew Burnside.
Shoppers told WREG they have never seen guards at Memphis Family Dollar locations.
However, a lack of video surveillance does not seem to be the problem.
Police have released multiple photos of suspects in recent weeks.
For example, police asked the public if anyone recognized two men who allegedly robbed a Family Dollar on Austin Peay on May 16.
Even before that, police asked if anyone could identify a man who they say robbed the Family Dollar at Poplar and Tillman on May 9.
Family Dollar sent WREG the following statement:
“Please know that the safety and security of our customers and Team Members is our first priority. We strive to create a safe work and shopping environment by tailoring our store operations and security for each store. We are continually enhancing our on-premise security and surveillance systems, and our employee training, to reduce the incidence of robberies. Family Dollar has proudly operated stores in the Memphis region for many years, in many cases in areas where other retailers have left. Unfortunately, when crime occurs in the communities and neighborhoods we serve, it affects everyone- including our stores.”
