Memphis Police investigating photo of officer sleeping in cruiser

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department responded Monday to a photo on social media that appears to show an officer asleep in an MPD cruiser.

“The officer in question has been identified, and an administrative investigation is underway. This behavior will not be tolerated, and I can assure you that corrective actions will be taken,” said Director Michael Rallings.

“This type of behavior does not represent the hardworking men and women of the Memphis Police Department.”

The photo had almost 1,200 shares as of Monday afternoon.

“All the crime that’s going on out here, kids dying, and people got these guns, they don’t got time to sleep on the job. He’s supposed to get his rest at home,” said Memphis resident Tiffany Hardy.

Others like taxpayer Patrick Durkin want the officer’s side of the story. He said the department is understaffed, the crime seems never-ending and wants to know if the officer has been over-worked.

“I would assume so in this town with our murder rates and crime,” he said. “We have officers not getting paid enough, not getting overtime and are leaving town to find jobs elsewhere.”

“Maybe they had him working a lot of hours, but still he needs to let them know,” said Hardy.

WREG reached out to Memphis Police Association, but they told us no comment.
