Man shot and killed at Kroger Fuel Center in East Memphis over loud music; guard charged with second degree murder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating a deadly shooting Saturday near an East Memphis Kroger.

Officers responded to the Kroger in the 6600 block of Poplar Avenue around 7. MPD said one man was shot and killed at the Kroger Fuel Center.

The victim was identified in police documents as Alvin Motley. WREG was told Motley was visiting Memphis from Chicago and had only been in town a few hours.

The suspect was identified as Gregory Livingston, 54, a Kroger security guard. He’s been charged with second-degree murder.

Memphis Police said the preliminary information reveals an argument between the victim and the suspect happened prior to the shooting.

On Sunday, in the affidavit, Memphis Police confirmed Livingston approached officers and told them he shot a man.

The shooting victim’s girlfriend witnessed the incident and told officers Livingston and her boyfriend argued over the volume of music coming from their car. The girlfriend had her boyfriend come back to the car, but he then exited the car and told Livingston they should “talk like men.”

Witnesses told WREG that Motley had loud music coming from his car, and the security guard asked him to turn it down. Shortly after, witnesses said they heard a shot.

Police said Motley was shot to death by Livingston. He was hit in the chest. Surveillance cameras captured the incident.

Livingston was taken into custody. Police said they recovered a 9 mm Glock 19 handgun.

A Kroger spokesperson released the following statement:

The Kroger Delta Division is working in full cooperation with the Memphis police department. This is an active investigation, therefore; we are deferring all questions to local law enforcement for the integrity of the investigation.
