SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A lieutenant with the Memphis Police Department was indicted on rape and sexual battery charges involving an underage girl, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said.
Jeffrey Jones was accused of raping the 15-year-old daughter of one of his friends sometime between December 2018 and May 2019. The incident reportedly took place inside a home in Arlington.
Jones was arrested Thursday and subsequently released on a $75,000 bond.
The 22-year MPD veteran has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of this investigation. A check of the lieutenant’s disciplinary history with the police department showed only found minor issues like occasionally being late for work.
No one answered the door at Jones’ home in Arlington on Friday.
“I mean, very respectful guy, didn’t get any weird feelings or anything from him,” said Isaac Banks, Jones’ neighbor.
Banks never thought he’d hear about allegations like this, but said Jones has no business being an officer if the allegations are true.
“Whenever the ones that protect and serve are the ones that are the predator, I mean, what do you do from there?” Banks said.
