Police say man armed with rifle stopped after fight in Oak Court Mall

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said officers were searching for an armed person near the Oak Court Mall on Sunday evening

Initially, there were reports of shots fired near or inside the mall, but Memphis Police said there has been no confirmation of any shots being fired.

In the video, you see a much larger man repeatedly punch another man on the second floor of the mall.

MPD said individuals were involved in an argument while inside the mall. One party went to get a gun and attempted to come back into the mall where he was stopped by security. The suspect fled the scene.

We spoke to several eyewitnesses who say the man laying the punches was the one trying to walk away from the situation.

According to witnesses, he was being followed and harassed throughout the mall by the other men you see in the video leading up to this confrontation.

“He was antagonizing him, and the man stopped him two or three times to tell him ‘I got kids your age, leave me alone’. He kept on. He kept on. So, he slapped the man’s hand when they got by children’s place, and it was on from there,” said an anonymous person.

Memphis Police have not confirmed this information or said who started the altercation.

MPD added, at this point it does not appear that any shots were fired. The suspect is described as a man with gold hair and was last seen wearing a unknown color shirt, light blue jeans, armed with an assault rifle.

Visitors we spoke to who were present when this incident happened told us there were several children around.

Memphis Police said one person was detained, but it is unknown if anyone was arrested.
