MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some groups have found a great way to honor a veteran this Memorial Day weekend.
They spent the day sprucing up his home home and his neighborhood.
Around 50 volunteers with ServiceMaster and Memphis Habitat for Humanity took over a home in the 600 block of McDavitt Place in Uptown.
They painted the home of Vietnam Veteran James Killion Jr. and did some landscaping to his yard.
They also improved the yards of several other homes and even cut the grass and weeds along the sidewalks.
“I would have done it myself, but I’m sick and I’ve got leg problems and prostate cancer. I’m glad you all are doing it for me,” said Killion.
Among those pitching in were other veterans.
Former Air Fore Air Specialist Velvet Graham said it was just another way to serve.
“It is so incredibly awesome. It feels so good. This is like the easiest thing we do all year,” said Graham.
People living across the street said they were looking forward to the new view and said it would only improve the neighborhood.
“It helps everyone. It keeps the badness out,” said Patrick Payne.
Habitat for Humanity has created 27 new homes in Uptown and planned to build 50 more there.
The organization also hoped to complete around 100 critical repair and rehab projects in the area.
