MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis woman is the first recipient this year to receive a $10,000 statewide scholarship from Western Governors University.
Andrea Slaughter got emotional when friends and family threw her a surprise party at City Hall.
They watched as WGU Tennessee awarded Slaughter a $10,000 scholarship to help pay for her education.
WGU started a partnership with the city of Memphis a few years ago allowing city employees like Slaughter to get a discount and even scholarships.
“I’m on cloud nine. I’m just so elated for my family to be able to share this with me,” she said.
A group of governors created Western Governors University so working adults like Slaughter could go back to school. The mother put off college to take care of her children.
WGU said so far the partnership has been successful.
