MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Zoo was in celebration mode Saturday as zookeepers named its red panda cub.

After a three-week contest to choose the name, it was “Scout” coming out on top.

Sheila Goodman and Lauren Deer submitted the name to the contest. In total, 782 people submitted about 300 names, and zookeepers chose a top five for the public to vote on.

Scout beat out Desi, Riley, Sullivan and Tenzing. There were about 4,000 votes cast in all.

The zoo hosted a “Red Panda Cub Naming Party” to officially bestow the name upon the cub. The naming coincides with International Red Panda Day.

The male cub was born June 3 to parents Justin and Lucille. Justin was the only member of the family to attend the naming ceremony, as Scout is still being reared by mother Lucille.
