MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Zoo leaders and said vandals have struck again.
According to the zoo, last night one or more people “caused irreparable damage to several of the stanchions the Memphis Zoo uses to temporarily delineate parking, in addition to 150 cones stolen.”
According to a zoo spokesperson, wind does not appear to have caused the damage.
Several of the fence pieces were reportedly warped, while others had their hinges broken off.
Police confirmed the Greensward barricades were vandalized and traffic cones were stolen.
The stanchions are metal fencing used to keep cars from driving into areas of the Greensward not to be used for parking and to keep protesters away from vehicles.
Police are investigating.
Several of the stanchions were said to be found stacked next to the Doughboy statue.
The Overton Park Conservancy posted on their Facebook page, “We arrived at this morning’s volunteer event to find that several of the stanchions on the Greensward had been destroyed or removed. While we don’t yet know who was responsible, we just want to remind everyone that not only is destruction of property a crime, but actions like this are harmful to the spirit of finding collaborative solutions to our shared issues.”
Last week, a large zoo billboard at East Parkway and Sam Cooper was vandalized. It’s not clear who caused the vandalism.
Zoo officials are asking anyone with information on either incident contact the Memphis Police Department.
The incident come as the zoo is being criticized for parking cars on the Greensward area.
Thursday it was announced the zoo and the Overton Park Conservancy have agreed to restripe the zoo parking lot and add parking to North Parkway for a total of 325 new spaces.
