MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People who live in Foote Homes know their time is winding down. The place they live will soon be demolished for something newer and better.

As for where they go in the meantime,  many still aren’t sure.

“I want to be somewhere where it is nicer, less crime,” said Edward Jenkins, who lives in Foote Homes.

He will be among a long list of people in search of a new home.

It’s not only the 400-plus Foote Home residents who have to find a new address. Add in the tenants at places like the Tulane and Warren Apartments, who are having to move because of major code violations.

It’s a huge influx of tenants trying to hook up with landlords.

“There are a couple of spots we can go to, but then we have to wait and be on a waiting list and all that. That’s just too much,” said Monterrio Kimbrel, who lives in the Warren Apartments.

Those landlords who want to do business with MHA have a chance to find out what that entails. The Landlord Workshop held Monday evening was to help them with everything from screening potential tenants to setting reasonable rent.

Residents get  vouchers that can be used to pay for a new place. They also get a list of potential properties.

Last month MHA officials told WREG they want to help make it a smooth move.

“The agency is behind them in their effort to move. We are not just redeveloping and moving families out and not giving them an opportunity to get a fresh start and move ahead in life,” William Webb with MHA told WREG last month.
