Michigan farmer unearths 11,000-year-old mammoth skeleton

— You never know what you might be able to dig up in your own backyard.

A farmer in Michigan dug up something special when he came across the bones of an 11,000-year-old woolly mammoth, WXMI reported.

James Bristle and a friend found the skeleton, which they originally believed was a bent fence post covered in mud, according to MLive.

It turned out to be a mammoth, likely a male in its 40s when it died about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, said University of Michigan professor Daniel Fisher.

Researchers from the University of Michigan recovered about 20 percent of the mammoth’s skeleton. About 30 mammoths have been found in the state, but this find yielded one of the more complete skeletons.
