(Memphis) The Mid-South Food Bank is asking for your help to put food on the table for families in need this Thanksgiving.
The bank is 1,700 turkeys short of its goal of 5,000, and time is running out.
Believe it or not, nearly half a million people in the Mid-South are in need of food, and they can’t afford it.
Janet Shipman is thankful for so much, so she wants to share her blessing at the Mid-South Food Bank this Thanksgiving.
“I just feel like we all have to take care of each other. So if it makes someone’s day to have a fresh turkey in their house that’s what I want to do for them.”
The Mid-South Food Bank depends on donations from people like Shipman to provide a Thanksgiving meal for families in need.
John Livingston is the operations manager for the food bank and says there are so many people who need help and want to feel loved this Thanksgiving.
“Our work is important because so many are struggling and without the food they get through us they may not pay a bill. This allows them to pay a bill, and keep their electric paid so they can eat also,” said Livingston.
The food bank hasn’t reached its goal of 5,000 turkeys yet, but there is good news.
With more than 3,300 donated so far, it has collected more turkeys than ever before, but it’s still just a drop in the bucket.
Livingston says they may be shy of that goal because so many people are in a financial crunch in the tight economy.
“The people who are helping are people who have been there or felt that pain before and they are the ones giving, and God bless them for what they do,” said Livingston.
