MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Hickory Hill woman is facing serious charges after she allegedly left her one-year-old in the car with the windows rolled up.
It happened Thursday in the Kroger parking lot at Riverdale and Shelby Drive. The toddler wasn’t hurt.
The baby’s mother, Lekenya McGee, told deputies she didn’t think about it and was only running into the store for a minute.
Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies say someone spotted the child around 5 p.m. The National Weather Service said the heat index was 93 degrees at the time.
“That’s just being selfish, like why would you put your child at risk like that?” Whitney Williams said. “It doesn’t take a minute to go into Kroger at all. In Kroger, Walmart, or any type of store like that, it takes a good 20 to 25 minutes or more.”
We went to McGee’s house to ask about what happened but no one answered.
McGee is charged with child neglect and abuse and is due in court Monday. A relative currently has custody of the child.
