ALCOA, Tenn. (WATE) — Two people were hospitalized after a plane crashed on the construction site of the new Amazon facility in Alcoa Thursday morning.

The single-engine plane crashed near the Alcoa Highway and Pellissippi Parkway intersection, north of the McGhee Tyson Airport. around 9:20 a.m., according to the FAA. According to a Blount County deputy, the plane crashed on the new Amazon facility located on South Singleton Station Road.

The FAA released a statement saying that there were two people on the plane. Alcoa Police say that both were taken to UT Medical Center following the crash.

Air traffic to McGhee Tyson Airport was temporarily shut down, forcing other aircraft being diverted to nearby airports. Air traffic control can be heard on scanner recordings responding to an incident 2 miles from the approach end of the airport.

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Alcoa Police Department in responding to the incident.
