MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A DeSoto County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after being hit by a driver going the wrong way on I-269 Tuesday, according to the DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas E. Tuggle II.

The sheriff said Deputy Brian Brock put his car in front of the wrong-way driver when he spotted her.

Sheriff Tuggle said the vehicle narrowly missed several cars as it was traveling in the wrong direction on I-269. The Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the driver as 54-year-old Tracy Balton of Olive Branch, Miss.

Brock, 34, positioned himself on the shoulder of I-269, just east of Craft Road. Recognizing that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, Sheriff Tuggle said Brock decided to put himself in between Balton and another person driving on the interstate.

Deputy Brock took the brunt of the impact head-on and was taken to Regional One Hospital. He has since been released and is recovering at home.

Balton was booked in the DeSoto County Jail on Tuesday and is charged with felony fleeing a law enforcement officer. She has no bond and a court date is set for April 9.
