MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Summer has officially arrived and brought with it some unbearable heat and humidity.
Experts said temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s over the next few days could also put people’s lives at risk.
The Shelby County Health Department told WREG between 2010 and 2014 more than 40 people in Shelby County have died from heated-related illnesses.
The health workers urged everyone to check on the elderly and take extra precautions during this heat wave to protect yourself.
Doctors said if you want to exercise or work outside try to do it during the early morning hours.
In addition, make sure you stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and stay in the shade as much as possible.
“If you are having a hard time doing that exercise or activity then stop. Listen to your body. Your body is telling you that you can’t do it,” said Dr. Stephanie Connelly with Midtown Internal Medicine.
The signs of heat exhaustion include fatigue, weakness, nausea or vomiting, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps and irritability.
If you experience any of those symptoms get into the air conditioning to cool off and drink some cool water.
If you don’t have air conditioning you are urged to go to the library, a mall or a community center during the day.
