JACKSON, Miss. — A new special-education bill is headed to Governor Phil Bryant’s desk.
The bill would create 500 school vouchers valued at $6,500 each the first year.
That money can be used by the students for private school tuition, tutoring or even therapy related to education.
The five-year pilot program would continue to add to the number of participating students each year until it reaches 2,500.
Supporters of the bill said it would give students an opportunity to get their needs met.
Opponents said the bill doesn’t reach enough of 66,500 special-education students living in the state.
The Senate passed the bill last week, but placed it on hold for the possibility of another debate.
Tuesday, the procedural hold was removed and sent to Governor Bryant who is expected to sign the bill.
