Mississippi deputy shot during traffic stop

OKOLONA, Miss. — Officials say a north Mississippi deputy has been shot by a motorcyclist during a traffic stop but is expected to recover.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says in a statement that Deputy Eric Sloan was shot about 3 a.m.

Cantrell says Sloan had pulled over the motorcycle for speeding.

When Sloan approached the motorcycle, the driver began shooting and hit Sloan in his protective vest, near the abdomen area.

Cantrell says Sloan is being treated at a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities said Monday that the suspect fled, and they’re looking for a black male wearing a red helmet with black stripes on a red speed bike with no license plate.

Last week, a Corinth officer’s life was saved when his vest stopped a bullet to his chest.
