MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — A Mississippi man was killed early Friday in a roadway shooting, the Marshall County Coroner said.
The coroner said Derrick Johnson, 20, was shot in his vehicle as he was traveling north on Chesterman Street between Moss and Neely in Holly Springs shortly after midnight. Family confirmed the victim’s name.
Holly Springs interim Police Chief Darryl Bowens said a 21-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder. He would not identify the suspect and said the investigation is ongoing.
Bowens said the Sky Cop Camera mounted near the shooting scene has provided important video for detectives.
“It showed the white Buick came into the area and just sped off and shots fired then,” Bowens said.
WREG’s Mike Suriani spoke with Gholson Glover, who identified the victim as his neighbor. He said he heard a car crash early Friday morning and was then approached by a man who asked him to call 911 because he had just shot a man.
“Somebody was shot in a car, and left out of here driving and hit my car right here, and went down there and hit that mailbox and garbage can across the street,” Glover said.
Glover says the victim’s white Buick also crashed into this fence and utility pole, coming to rest in the middle of the street with the engine still running.
If you know anything, call the Holly Springs Police Department.
