OXFORD, Miss. — Mississippi Highway Patrol has completed its initial investigation into the car crash that killed Anthony Hervey on Sunday, but is asking for the public’s help in identifying the vehicle the survivor said drove their car off the road.

Hervey, 49, of Oxford, Mississippi, was driving a Ford Explorer with passenger Arlene Barnum, of Stuart, Oklahoma, westbound on U.S. Route 278 when the crash happened.

The two were returning from a pro-Confederate flag and Southern history rally in Birmingham, Alabama, that Hervey spoke at.

Both Hervey and Barnum are black and Confederate flag supporters; Hervey even wrote a book on the subject.

Barnum said a silver vehicle was following their car and swerved toward them.

No contact was made between the two vehicles, but Barnum said the silver vehicle’s actions caused the Explorer to leave the roadway.

“I heard him say, ‘Hell no!’ And he sped up. And this car came up on the passenger side to run him off the road,” Barnum told WREG’s Katie Rufener on Monday.

The Explorer drove off the right shoulder of the road into an embankment and ditch. The car rolled over several times.

The Lafayette County Coroner’s Office pronounced Hervey dead at the scene. Barnum survived but was injured and taken to the hospital.
