PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — A 40-year-old Panola County woman was killed in the storms that swept through Mid-South states Sunday night.
The Panola County coroner confirmed that Mildred Manning was killed when a tree landed across her trailer on Ramsey Circle. She lived in a mobile home community off Highway 51 between Sardis and Batesville.
Manning was with her fiancé when it happened around 10 p.m. He ran to the manager’s mobile home for help.
Witnesses said several people went to Manning’s trailer and tried to get her out. They yelled for her but got no response.
“I was tapping, hollering for Millie, trying to get her to answer me of make a movement or anything,” neighbor Stan Burkes said. “I could hear the little puppy, he kept scratching and so I just kept tapping, maybe thinking he might could wake her up if she was just knocked out or something.
One of the firefighters at the scene forced his way into the house. Burkes said his neighbor was found under the bed.
Burkes said manning was a “really sweet” person who loved her fiance Tim. She’d lived there for nine years.
“They’d ride the four-wheelers around and she would hang on to him. She loved that man. They were soulmates. You could not separate them,” he said.
Someone found Manning’s dog, named Reb, Monday afternoon. Reb will be returned to Manning’s fiancé.
Family and friends set up a GoFundMe to help with Manning’s funeral expenses.
