MLGW is giving away 200 air conditioning units

MEMPHIS, Tenn — Memphis Light Gas and Water is giving away 200 air conditioning units to low income seniors, and disabled residents who qualify.

In order to qualify for the “Play it Cool” program, you must live in Shelby County and be a low income senior without a working air conditioning unit.

The department says every year it gets calls from seniors looking for ways to keep cool during the summer months.

There are a few restrictions.

“We don’t do upkeep on the unit, however we do install them. But if we go to a home and there’s already one there, that customer won’t be eligible. If we go to a home and there are window guards on the window, we can’t install those air conditioners in those homes either,” said Gale Carson with MLGW.

In order to apply, applicants must have a Tennessee State ID or driver’s license, the most recent pay stub or social security income statements.

Those with disabilities, who do not meet the age requirement, need to bring proper certificate information.

Neighborhood Christian Center is hosting the screening and application process for free May 19th and 20th from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m.
