MLGW releases map of areas likely to be affected by rolling blackouts

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Due to the high temperatures in the coming week, some MLGW customers are more likely to experience rolling blackouts.

The rolling blackouts may be necessary after a fire to substation 68.

MLGW said customers in Arlington, Lakeland and surrounding areas served by that substation would experience the blackouts during the peak hours of between 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The blackouts would rotate between sections, so an entire city would not be blacked out at one time.

Substation 68 should return to service by Aug. 8, according to MLGW, at which time customers will no longer be at risk of rolling blackouts.

The blackouts, which are unprecedented in recent history, would balance power loads and protect the electric distribution system from damage, according to MLGW.

Starting Sunday, MLGW will notify customers who are most likely to be affected by rolling blackouts.

MLGW suggested customers voluntarily cut back on power use to “minimize the impact of rolling blackouts.”
