MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Six hundred hot and hearty meals were provided to families in North Memphis free of charge by MLGW union workers.

“We just feel strongly that this is Thanksgiving, this is what the holiday is all about. Giving back, about sharing what you have with other people,” said Bill Hawkins with IBEW Local 1288.

A community member said if it weren’t for this meal today, she doesn’t know what she would eat.

“What would I eat? I couldn’t even answer that right now,” she said.

She said she’s not sure when or where her next meal will be. Sunday, she didn’t have to worry.

“Everybody needs something. I thank God for the food I have today,” the resident said.

“This area of town is messed up. It went down. But I love that people are coming together,” another resident said.

From the oldest members of the neighborhood to the very youngest, families walked out of Girlee’s Soul Food on Chelsea with big smiles.

The union hopes to pass out food baskets in a few weeks for the Christmas holiday.
