(Memphis) When it comes to taking care of the homeless, Baptist Memorial is considered one of the top health care providers in the country.
For the past 10 years its mobile medical clinic has been helping tens of thousand of people without a permanent place to call home.
Friday, Baptist Operation Outreach announced it is partnering up with Christ Community Health Centers to provide primary care to families living at the Salvation Army’s shelters on Jackson Avenue.
The medical van will visit the shelter every two weeks.
Volore Granger, a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, is living at the Salvation Army with her six-year-old daughter.
Granger says when you are homeless that last thing you think about is health care.
She says the regular checkups will help her avoid late night trips to the emergency room.
“It’s it’s going to be great. Very reliable, having something reliable,” said Granger.
Last year, Baptist Operation Outreach provided health care to around 3,000 homeless people in the community.
Baptist says its goal is to help those living on the streets get healthy and find permanent housing.
