Update: The child’s mother Katrina Johnson has been charged with aggravated child abuse. Police say John did not try to stop the beating and did not take her son for medical attention until the next day.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is charged with severely beating a child for reportedly eating the last piece of a cheesecake.

The boy, who is 3, was in critical condition at last report.

The child’s mother told police Anthony Gulledge came home and was mad her son had eaten the last piece of a cheesecake.

Gulledge reportedly dragged the boy by his ankles, then whipped him. The child’s mother said Gulledge later hit her son again.

The child has a dislocated vertebrae and a broken femur.

“No child deserves that, over a slice of cake,” one woman said.

Her kids go to daycare near where police say Gulledge beat the little boy.

“That’s a little nerve racking,” she said.

Police charged Gulledge with neglect, aggravated child abuse and domestic assault.

Gulledge, who is being held on a $210,000 bond, denied hitting the child.
