MEMPHIS, Tenn– In Shelby Farms, joggers are used to hitting the trails in frigid conditions are hoping to avoid a second week filled with snow and ice covering parts of Memphis and the Mid-South.
Sam Stout ran eight miles today, but is ready for the weather to take a different path.
“I feel like everyone else. I’m getting tired of it and I’m ready for the warm weather, but hopefully I can make it through another snow or two, ” Stout said.
Runners such as Hongbo Wang agree that they’re ready for a change.
“I was born in China and in northern China. It’s much colder down here. It’s a lot of snow during the winter,” Wang said.
Just when many people have said they’ve had enough of the snow and ice, there’s a possibity of more wintry weather.
WREG Meteorologist Austen Onek said there’s chance of more snow, freezing rain and sleet that could arrive overnight causing problems for drivers.
“The storm system coming in, even though it will be dropping very small amounts, maybe an inch, it doesn’t take much for all that snow to get mashed down by numerous truck tires and you get a nice glaze out there on top of that and we could see travel headaches tomorrow morning,” Onek said.
That forecast comes after a week where Memphians and Mid-Southerners were forced to close schools, drive on dangerous and iced over roadways, warming centers were opened for the homeless and the weather sent many stocking up on food at grocery stores.
Inside the Shelby County Office of Preparedness Control Room, director Dale Lane shows of the technology used to monitor this situation.
Lane said if another round of precipitation hits Memphis and Shelby County, they’ll be ready.
“We are very prepared. The road crews will go out early afternoon treating the roadways. Our staff will activate at a level four at the operation center and we’ll monitor the storm and the processes coming into it, ” Lane said.
