(Brighton, TN) A mother and daughter were killed in a crushing collision on Highway 51 in Tipton County. It happened Friday afternoon in Brighton.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Kevin Williams said an SUV was driving north along with another SUV when the two hit.
“Both vehicles left the shoulder of the roadway. One of the vehicles collided with a utility pole breaking that utility pole in half and the vehicle rolled.”
It landed on its roof. Inside the SUV a mother and daughter. Both were both ejected and died at the scene.
Their vehicle was so mangled that law enforcement couldn’t tell if the two were wearing their seat belts.
“There’s so much damage to the vehicle, that’s still being looked into,” Williams said.
The driver of the other vehicle ended up down the road. She was taken to the hospital and released.
Traffic backed up for as troopers tried to figure out what caused the two cars to collide.
People who live here say they see accidents along Hwy 51 all the time.
“I think people go into that curve too fast I really do,” Roger Elam said.
“They act that it’s a racetrack,”Wendy Walker added.
Friday evening news traveled fast that a mother and daughter from Munford were killed on that stretch of highway. The accident happened just a few miles from where they live.
The two vehicles were towed from the accident scene leaving investigators looking for clues.
“Our investigators can look at actual vehicles and download data and know a lot more,” Williams said.
Investigators are also talking to witnesses.
The victims killed in the crash have been identified as 70-year-old Peggy Harvey and her 46-year-old daughter Shelley.
62-year-old Sherry Claffey was injured in the wreck.
