MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mother was arrested after checking on her child Wednesday afternoon.
Police say Alycia Williams went to Hamilton Elementary Wednesday afternoon after learning her child was sick after taking some pills known to treat hypertension and ADHD.
According to police a 10-year-old boy took the pills from his mother and gave them to kids on the school bus. A teacher then noticed the students kept falling asleep in class.
When Williams showed up to the school, she was arrested on an outstanding drug warrant.
“She’s a nice mother. She’s a very nice, great mother to her child,” Mack Pryor, who lives in the same apartment complex as Williams, said.
He couldn’t believe it when he heard she’s now in jail, arrested after checking on her child.
WREG asked police why they questioned Williams from all the other parents at the school, but a spokeswoman with the Memphis Police Department didn’t know.
Records show the warrant for Williams’ arrest was for not following probation or reporting to her probation officer. The warrant was issued in May of 2013.
According to a 2012 affidavit, Memphis Police found her at the Airport Inn Hotel. Inside the hotel, police reported finding marijuana and in Williams’ purse, “A clear plastic bag containing multiple white rocks consistent with crack cocaine.”
They also said they discovered a large amount of money.
Pryor said he’s disappointed by the arrest.
“I mean I feel sad because she’s in jail and she’s not able to take care of her child because she’s in jail,” he said.
WREG asked police where Williams’ child is now staying, but we haven’t heard back.
She’s due in court next week.
